European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
