Israel Launches Assault on Iranian Territory as Blasts Heard in Tehran
Early Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of significant blasts rocking the Iranian capital, following claims from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preventative strike.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, two plumes of thick smoke were seen billowing over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The type of these blasts suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency stated, without immediately offer further details.
Background: Escalating Strains and Prior Developments
The incident occurs against a backdrop of severely escalated strains in the Middle East. Key events leading up to this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of US naval forces in the region, including the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with indications of further discussions planned.
- Public Statements: Prior to the strike, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or confront serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the US of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. Officials rejected assertions about missile development and casualty figures as unfounded.
The situation is fast-moving, with additional reports expected as events unfold.
