They're Repeating in America What They Did to Christianity

The Trump movement's most revealing and defining occasions – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of several weeks, the American president started showing everyone his plans for a gilded ballroom two times larger compared to the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the East Wing to erect it.

He has done things countless times more severe – the existing assessment of deaths from his cuts to USAID is 600,000 and growing, and presently a study predicted his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have attempted – truly, no previous leader would have contemplated – solo demolishing major areas of the White House in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of some of the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom conduct transactions with the government.

We went from 'the meek shall inherit the Earth' to 'the humble will perish from cholera'

As confusing as it is to witness the leader try to upend the established notion regarding democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it completely novel. That is those of us – among senior generations close to half – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have witnessed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we learned about into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of affection into a symbol of hostility who approves exactly the harshness that he condemned in biblical teachings; this has happened at a slower pace, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.

A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself

Therefore allow me to outline the Savior from my upbringing, since in theory Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and given that the rapidly expanding group of Americans could have minimal awareness about him as they consider themselves non-believers or doubters or spiritual independents. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that there are pearls of substantial value in the Christian story.

It is decidedly absolutely not the account of a powerful ruler appearing; conversely, an infant arrives to displaced parents in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to escape undercover officers. The infant develops in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his teaching concerns compassion for other people, particularly for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and housing. Jesus' answer to violence is to present the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a method to instruct the assailant; his crime policy is that if a person pilfers your jacket you should give the person your additional clothing as well.

The apparent and clear reality that Christ of the gospels calls for a type of extreme compassion centered on the impoverished has perpetually caused Christianity somewhat of a provocative belief system: appealing to the populace, but owing to its intrinsic extremism needing to be controlled. During the 1950s it was contained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it basically blessed current circumstances.

A Struggle for the Best Within Us

Therefore I have felt inspired to witness the persistent defiance to Trump develop during the previous year. It has been significant comfort to help build the movement that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired citizens to turn out in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We will need to persist with it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners at every demonstration and requests to the best parts within national heritage.

We're going to be asked ... regarding how you welcomed the immigrant? Did you welcome them and embrace them or refuse?

The country is optimally secured, essentially, by reference to the finest in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is best defended through connection to elements that cause it to be special and magnificent, which is the example of Jesus. In both situations does it suggest feigning the worst of both America and Christianity was nonexistent; it represents both meekness and conviction, a mixture that serious US believers ought to accept.
